NBEA’s Journey to a Custom, Engaging Community Platform with GroupApp
When Joe McClary, Executive Director of the National Business Education Association (NBEA), set out to revamp their community strategy, he knew the stakes were high. NBEA’s mission is to empower business educators who teach a vast range of topics from accounting to international business. Connecting educators and facilitating impactful discussions were at the heart of their work, but their existing solutions were falling short.
NBEA’s educators needed a digital home—a space to share ideas, collaborate, and grow together. Initially, they turned to Facebook for its convenience, but it soon became evident that it was not the supportive environment they needed. The platform’s distractions and disorganized structure made meaningful engagement difficult.
“As an association manager, we find it difficult to engage across such a broad spectrum of business topics in a way that is organized and collaborative,” Joe explained.
What they needed was clear: an exclusive, tailored platform where educators could easily connect, share knowledge, and support one another without distractions.
Joe and the NBEA team conducted an in-depth analysis, comparing 10 different platforms to find the perfect fit. GroupApp stood out not only for its all-in-one community features but also for the support and flexibility it offered.
“We got almost 90% of the benefits in terms of features we wanted, for about a third of the cost. So, it was a no-brainer,” Joe recalled.
What sealed the deal was GroupApp’s willingness to create a custom API to seamlessly integrate with NBEA’s existing systems. Joe knew that working with a provider who truly had their back was rare, but GroupApp’s team delivered. They handled the technical heavy lifting—from developing the custom API for streamlined logins to managing data migration—so NBEA could focus on their mission.
The collaboration between NBEA and GroupApp was marked by clear communication and hands-on support. The GroupApp development team worked closely with NBEA, ensuring every aspect of the transition was smooth. The process of integrating user profiles and setting up login functionalities was done without a hitch, and NBEA’s management didn’t have to worry about the technical complexities.
“You can really tell when a provider has your back. The GroupApp team didn’t just pass us off to someone else for integration; they worked hand in hand with us,” Joe emphasized.
Once the platform was set up, NBEA members could access the community using their existing association credentials, removing any barriers to entry. Joe appreciated how user-friendly the platform was, noting that there was no need for his team or members to learn complicated tech or coding just to make things work.
The result was an organized, distraction-free space where educators could come together and engage meaningfully. Channels within GroupApp were set up to facilitate discussions on specific topics like accounting, IT management, and more, helping members navigate content relevant to their interests and expertise.
NBEA’s members now use the platform’s iOS and Android apps to stay connected on the go, making it easy to engage wherever they are. The community atmosphere Joe and his team envisioned had finally come to life.
“We didn’t want our team to learn all the techy stuff. GroupApp handles all that for us, so we can focus on what really counts,” Joe shared.
GroupApp’s tailored approach not only met NBEA’s current needs but set the stage for future growth. By integrating seamlessly with their existing systems, providing robust community management tools, and maintaining user-friendliness, GroupApp proved to be more than just a platform—it became a reliable partner.
NBEA’s journey with GroupApp shows that having the right technology and support can transform how an association connects and engages its members. With GroupApp, Joe and his team have been able to foster a collaborative, distraction-free learning environment that supports their educators in teaching and inspiring the next generation of business leaders.
