Quick Verdict
Thinkific is one of the most comprehensive online course platforms available to creators and businesses in the United States and worldwide. It’s really good for building and selling professional online courses. But the Basic plan at $49 is missing too many core features, there’s no free plan, and the jump to good analytics requires $199/month.

Thinkific, found at thinkific.com, is a dedicated online course platform and learning management system built for creators, educators, coaches, and businesses who want to build and sell online courses at scale.
Unlike general e-commerce platforms, Thinkific is built specifically around digital education.
The course builder, site builder, student management system, and sales tools are all designed to help you create, sell, and deliver Thinkific online courses that students actually complete.
That laser focus is both its greatest strength and its clearest limitation.
For online course creation and selling, Thinkific is very capable.
But if you’re building complex marketing funnels or managing group learning programs with peer accountability built in, gaps start to show fast.
Brothers Greg Smith and Matt Smith co-founded Thinkific in Vancouver, Canada.
Greg was teaching a bar exam prep course and struggled to deliver it online without building custom software himself.
That problem became the product.
Today, thinkific.com serves 35,000 customers in more than 100 countries. Creators and businesses have earned $3.7 billion through the platform and reached 214 million learners.
The platform has gone through significant restructuring, too.
What was historically known as the Thinkific Pro Plan or the Thinkific Growth Package now exists under a refreshed structure: Basic, Start, Grow, and Thinkific Plus.
If you’ve read older reviews that mention a Thinkific free plan or different plan names, those are outdated.
Thinkific also no longer offers a permanent free plan; instead, you get a 30-day free trial today.
| The global e-learning market is projected to reach $325 billion by 2025, with a 7.9% CAGR. So, the platform you build on will determine whether you capture a piece of that growth or spend years migrating. Source: Research and Markets E-Learning Global Market Report 2024 |
Before we break down every feature, here are the numbers that define what Thinkific is and isn’t. These come directly from the official thinkific.com pricing page.
| Metric | Data | What it means for your business |
| Customers | 35,000+ in 100+ countries | Real scale with proven market fit |
| Creator revenue | $3.7 billion generated | The platform actually drives real sales |
| Learners reached | 214 million | Delivery works at scale |
| Free plan | None; 30-day trial only | No permanent free option exists in 2026 |
| Starting price | $49/month | Mid-range entry; not cheapest, not priciest |
| Completion certs | Start plan ($99) and above | Not available on Basic |
| Assignments | Start plan ($99) and above | Not available on Basic |
| Zoom integration | Start plan ($99) and above | Not available on Basic |
| Analytics depth | Enhanced on Grow ($199) only | Basic and Start have shallow reporting |
| Student cap | 10,000 on Basic/Start/Grow | Unlimited only on Plus |
| SCORM | Plus only | Enterprise-tier feature |
| Transaction fees | 0% extra via Thinkific Payments | 2.9% processing; no platform cut |
| Uptime | 99.5% guarantee on all plans | Reliable infrastructure throughout |
| Branded mobile app | $199/month add-on | Not included in any standard plan |
The $49 entry price delivers a functional course platform, but not a professional one, so most serious creators end up on Start or Grow within the first few months.
The Thinkific course builder is one of the most accessible I’ve seen at any price point in the online course platform market.
After signing up, Thinkific shows a ‘Get Started’ checklist that walks you through your first Thinkific course step by step. This way, a non-technical creator can have their first lesson live in under an hour.
Course content is organized into Chapters and Lessons, and every lesson type is accessible from a single ‘Add Lesson’ button.
These are the full lesson options available across the platform:
With the drag-and-drop builder, you can reorder lessons and chapters instantly, while the Bulk Importer uploads multiple files at once and creates lessons automatically.

The ‘Copy Lessons From’ feature pulls lessons from other Thinkific courses, saving creators significant time when content overlaps.
You also get helpful course templates like Mini-course, Flagship course, Pre-sell course, Membership resource library, and Webinar replay.
Each of these templates prestructures the course so you’re not starting from a blank page, which removes the first major mental block for new course creators.
The Course Player (what Thinkific users see when they take your online course) is clean, professional, and mobile-friendly.
Color scheme, fonts, and logo are customizable in the Settings tab, and a live preview of the student experience is available without leaving the builder.
The real limitation on course design, though, is that you can’t redesign the Course Player layout beyond colors and logos.
Advanced instructional designers who want full layout control will feel these limits fast, but it won’t matter if you’re building your first or second Thinkific course.
Verdict: Thinkific course builder
Excellent for most creators. One of the most user-friendly course builders in the online course platform market, with a wide content type range, guided setup, and useful templates. However, advanced design customization is limited, but non-technical creators will love it. Instructional design specialists will eventually want more.
The site builder is where you build your course site (the public website at your custom domain that sells your courses).
Thinkific offers three base theme templates with three to four color variations each, giving you ten pre-made designs total.

Ten designs are a low number compared to dedicated website builders, so if your brand has specific design requirements, you’ll hit the template limits quickly.
Advanced CSS and HTML editing are available in the Start plan, helping tech-savvy creators push beyond the defaults.
The drag-and-drop site builder includes 23 pre-formatted page sections.
These clearly reflect expertise in course marketing: CTA blocks, testimonials, FAQ sections, instructor profiles, pricing tables, upsell sections, product listing blocks, and video embeds.
One major advantage is that Thinkific integrates with your existing website, so you don’t have to rebuild your entire site.
You can connect Thinkific as the course delivery layer to an existing WordPress, custom-built, or CMS site while keeping your main website separate.
A custom domain is also available on all plans, including the Basic plan at $49.
This is an advantage over platforms like Stan Store, where custom domains simply don’t exist at any price.
The landing page and landing pages creation tools cover what course creators need: smart product blocks, checkout integration, ‘coming soon’ preview pages for pre-launch campaigns, and student-specific dashboard views.
What the Thinkific site builder can’t do, though, is multi-step sales funnels, complex upsell sequences, and the kind of high-conversion marketing pages that a dedicated sales funnel builder provides.
That’s because Thinkific is a course site builder, not a sales funnel builder, and the two are basically different tools.
Verdict: Thinkific website builder
Really good for building a professional course website fast. The 23 pre-built marketing sections are thoughtfully designed, but the three base themes limit creative options. For advanced funnel building and custom design beyond HTML/CSS, Thinkific needs third-party support.
Thinkific includes community features directly on the platform, rather than using a third-party tool.
The Basic plan offers one community with five Spaces; the Start plan gives you one community with ten Spaces; the Grow plan gives you three communities with 20 Spaces; and Thinkific Puls gives you unlimited communities and spaces.
Spaces are distinct, organized areas within a community, each with its own topics and discussions. You can create private spaces for specific cohorts, teams, or groups to collaborate away from the main community.
All plans also include threaded replies, mentions, user profiles, and community notifications.

But paid memberships that gate community access, or bundle a community with courses, require the Start plan.
What the Thinkific community is missing is gamification, points, leaderboards, challenges, or lesson-level discussion channels tied directly to specific course content.
That last point makes more sense for learning outcomes.
On Thinkific, community and course content live in separate sections, so any student with a question about lesson 7 has to leave the lesson and navigate to the community. The discussion is disconnected from the learning moment.
In contrast, platforms like GroupApp take a different approach, with every lesson having its own built-in discussion channel. This allows students to discuss content right where they encounter it.
According to research, that kind of community + course structure drives 40% higher completion rates in group programs than on platforms with separate community feeds.
Verdict: Thinkific community
Functional for creating a general community brand around your courses. However, it falls short of dedicated community platforms in terms of structure, gamification, and lesson-level integration. The community is okay for individual creators but unsuitable for group learning programs where peer accountability drives outcomes.
Thinkific’s marketing tools are among the platform’s strongest features.
The list of tools included on the entry-level Basic plan alone is more generous than most competitors at $49.
Here’s what every Thinkific marketing plan includes from day one:
The Start plan adds free trial course offers, after-purchase upsell flows, payment plans, product bundles, and one revenue-sharing partner.
Similarly, the Grow plan adds group orders for bulk purchases, three revenue-sharing partners, API access for custom integrations, and full removal of Thinkific branding.
Abandoned cart recovery is automatic through TCommerce.
This way, Thinkific sends follow-up emails automatically when a student starts checkout and then leaves.
The feature works on day one, even on the $49 Basic plan, which is a big advantage over platforms where abandoned cart recovery is available only at higher tiers.
The missing links are multi-step funnel sequences, behavioral email triggers based on lesson activity, advanced audience segmentation, and dynamic product recommendations.
Thinkific is a strong sales tool for courses, but it’s not a sales funnel builder.
Verdict: Thinkific marketing tools
Strong for the price. Order bumps and abandoned cart on Basic at $49 are more generous than Teachable, Kajabi, and most competitors at comparable prices. However, the platform lacks native advanced funnel-building, so you need external email marketing tools for behavioral automation.
Thinkific includes email automation on all plans.
But to be specific, it’s transactional email automation, and not full email marketing.
Here’s what the built-in email tools cover: welcome emails on enrollment, receipt emails, lesson notifications, course completion emails, and abandoned cart recovery sequences.
These send automatically on triggers, with no setup required.
What the built-in tools don’t cover: broadcast email campaigns to your full list, behavioral segmentation by lesson completion, A/B testing, and visual email sequence builders.
For full email marketing, Thinkific integrates with Mailchimp, Mailerlite, AWeber, Constant Contact, Kit, and ActiveCampaign
The integrations push student enrollment data into your external email tool so you can run proper campaigns from there.
That means a creator who wants full email marketing alongside Thinkific needs to budget for both a Thinkific plan and a dedicated email platform.
Now compare that to Kajabi at $179/month, which includes full email broadcasts, visual automations, and campaign management.
The $130/month gap between Kajabi and Thinkific Start needs to be weighed against the external email tool subscription required on Thinkific.
Verdict: Thinkific email marketing
Solid for transactional and notification emails out of the box. Broadcast email marketing and behavioral automation require an external tool and additional cost, so the Thinkific integration workflow is straightforward for creators with an existing email platform like Kit. But if you want everything in one dashboard, Thinkific will disappoint.
TCommerce is Thinkific’s built-in payments and selling system, powered by Thinkific Payments.
It’s available across all plans and is the most important feature to understand when evaluating Thinkific transaction fees.
When you use Thinkific Payments as your payment processor through TCommerce, you pay the standard 2.9% processing rate (the same as using Stripe independently).
But when you use Stripe or PayPal directly as a third-party processor, an additional third-party payment gateway fee applies on top of those processors’ own rates.
This additional fee varies by plan.
TCommerce includes these features on all plans: order bumps, gifting, abandoned cart recovery, flexible payment options, coupons, and affiliate reporting.
Smart Credit Card Retries automatically reattempt failed payments, recovering revenue from declined cards without any creator involvement.
Buy Now Pay Later is available through TCommerce in eligible markets.
Offering BNPL at checkout typically increases average order value by 30% to 50% and reduces cart abandonment, which is great for creators selling higher-priced professional training programs.
Using PayPal as a payment method at student checkout is locked to the Grow plan at $199/month.
That’s the limitation for creators on Basic or Start plans with students who prefer PayPal. It matters less for United States-based sellers than for international audiences.
| Offering Buy Now Pay Later at checkout increases average order value by 30-50% and reduces cart abandonment. Thinkific’s TCommerce includes BNPL for eligible plans and markets. Source: Splitit Buy Now Pay Later Consumer Research 2024 |
Verdict: TCommerce
Genuinely strong. The no-extra-platform-fee model via Thinkific Payments is competitive and fair. TCommerce’s Basic features are more complete than most competitors’ at $49. But PayPal’s $199 Grow plan requirement is an annoying restriction for an international audience.
Thinkific’s reporting is tiered, and the gap between plans is significant.
Here’s exactly what each plan delivers:
The Student Engagement reports on the Grow plan are the data that actually drive course improvement decisions.
Which lessons have low completion? Where do students drop off? Which content format gets the most engagement? You can’t answer these questions on the Basic or Start plans.
For creators on Basic or Start who need deeper analytics, Google Analytics and other third-party integrations are available on all plans.
But that requires additional setup, another account, and manual data migration between platforms.
Verdict: Thinkific analytics
Solid on the Grow plan at $199, but disappointing on both the Basic and Start plans, given their price points. Getting meaningful engagement data requires jumping from $99 to $199 per month, which is a high additional cost just to understand how students are actually engaging with your content.
Completion certificates are locked behind the $99 Start plan.
On the $49 Basic plan, you can’t issue any kind of certificate when a student completes a Thinkific course.
In 2026, this is surprising for any platform positioned for professional training.
For professional training businesses, coaching certification programs, or any course where proof of completion has value to the student, the Basic plan fails the core requirement.
That pushes most professional creators directly to $99/month.
Certificate customization is available on the Start plan and above.
You can edit the design, add your branding, and customize the text, while Thinkific automatically populates the student’s name, course name, and completion date from the student record.
Assignments let students submit work directly inside the course.
You review submissions, leave feedback, and mark them as complete from the admin dashboard.
This feature separates a professional online course from a passive video playlist, but is locked behind a $99 fee.
Course compliance tools on Start and above enforce lesson completion order, set minimum time requirements per lesson, and require quiz passes before advancing.
These are essential for compliance training in regulated industries like healthcare, finance, and legal.
When it comes to formal graded assessments with hard pass/fail thresholds and scored outcomes (exams), you need the Grow plan at $199.

The distinction between quizzes on Start and exams on Grow matters for professional certification programs where formal assessment standards apply.
Verdict: Thinkific certificates and assignments
The features work well and are well-implemented, but the paywall placement is the problem. In 2026, asking creators to pay $99/month for completion certificates feels like holding a core professional feature hostage. It forces an unnecessary upgrade for any creator running a professional training program.
Zoom integration for live coaching sessions and webinars is available from the Start plan.
Creators on Basic are limited to five coaching and webinar sessions, while those on Start and above get unlimited live events.
The setup is clean, though. You create a Zoom session inside Thinkific, set the schedule, and students receive automated confirmation and reminder emails with the join link. The live session appears as a lesson inside the Thinkific course structure.
The integration is native enough that it doesn’t feel like a third-party add-on.
Students don’t need their own Zoom accounts, and recordings can be saved as replay lessons inside the course after the live session ends.
Still, Thinkific lacks native video streaming, so every live session is hosted on Zoom.
Creators who want a fully self-contained, branded live experience without an external tool need either a different platform or a Zoom subscription.
Verdict: Thinkific live events
Clean Zoom integration that handles coaching use cases well. The Basic plan’s five-session limit is restrictive for active coaches. Reliance on Zoom as the only live-streaming option creates a gap for creators who want a fully branded live experience without using external accounts.
Thinkific supports selling digital products beyond courses: PDFs, eBooks, workbooks, templates, and other downloadable files.
Creators on the Basic plan are limited to 5 digital downloads, while those on the Start, Grow, and Plus plans get unlimited downloads.
Digital products also integrate naturally with the course structure.
On the Start plan and above, you bundle digital downloads with courses as package products. For example, you can have a workbook alongside a course, templates alongside a training program, or resource guides alongside a coaching program.
The 5-download limit on the Basic plan constrains creators who sell a meaningful catalog of standalone digital products.
Thinkific is better suited for bundling digital downloads with courses than for selling standalone digital products.
Creators who primarily sell digital downloads rather than courses have better-suited platforms, such as Gumroad, the Stan Store, and Podia.
Verdict: Selling digital products on Thinkific
Selling digital products is functional and well-integrated with the course ecosystem. The bundle capability on Start adds real value for course creators who include supplemental materials. But the 5-download limit on Basic is too restrictive for any creator with a real digital product catalog.
Paid memberships require the Start plan at $99/month.
While Basic users can create Thinkific communities, they can’t charge for access to them.
Membership programs on Thinkific combine community access with course content under one subscription billing structure. Students pay per cycle and access everything their membership tier includes.
This is a great model for creators who build content libraries.
For example, fitness trainers who publish new workouts monthly, language teachers who release new lessons weekly, and business coaches who maintain growing resource vaults.
Thinkific handles the recurring billing, access management, and cancellation flows automatically.
Verdict: Thinkific Memberships
Well-implemented for content library creators. The combination of community, courses, and subscription billing on a single platform eliminates the need for separate membership tools. However, it’s locked behind a $99/month price point, which prevents Basic plan creators from using recurring revenue models.
The Thinkific LMS positioning is nuanced. For individual course creators, the platform functions well as an LMS.
Student enrollment, progress tracking, completion reporting, certificate issuance, and compliance tools cover most creator-level learning management needs.
SCORM compliance (the standard format used by corporate and institutional eLearning for importing content built in tools like Articulate 360) is exclusively a Thinkific Plus feature.
This means organizations that need SCORM for corporate training delivery need the Plus plan, which requires a custom sales conversation.
Other Plus-only LMS features include learning paths with progression mapping, a built-in AI teaching assistant, Single Sign-On (SSO) for corporate credentials, advanced password complexity controls, a dedicated sandbox testing site, and CRM integrations with HubSpot and Salesforce.
For companies and professional training businesses using Thinkific for employee learning or customer education, the Plus plan is not optional.
The critical enterprise learning management features are concentrated in that top tier.
Verdict: Thinkific LMS features
Strong creator-level LMS on Start and Grow. Enterprise LMS capabilities, including SCORM, SSO, and custom integrations, are Plus-only. Thinkific occupies an interesting middle ground: more capable than a basic course platform, but less comprehensive than an enterprise LMS without the Plus plan.
The Thinkific App Store is available to all plan users and contains over 45 direct integrations.

This dedicated marketplace for platform extensions is one of Thinkific’s key differentiators from competitors that rely solely on Zapier.
Notable integrations include: Shopify, Salesforce, Segment, Intercom, Google Analytics, Poptin, Mailchimp, ActiveCampaign, Kit, and Zapier.
The Shopify integration is especially valuable for creators who already have an e-commerce presence and want to add course delivery.
Zapier triggers are available on all plans.
Zapier actions, however, require the Grow plan.
Standard API and Webhooks access also requires the Grow plan at $199/month.
For technically sophisticated businesses that want custom integrations or to connect Thinkific to internal systems, the API is a strong feature.
But requiring the $199 Grow plan for API access is a meaningful barrier for creators who need programmatic integration without paying for the full analytics and admin upgrade.
Verdict: Thinkific integrations
The App Store is a meaningful differentiator, with 45+ native integrations that cover most creator and business needs. API and Webhooks behind the $199 Grow plan create friction for technically advanced creators on lower tiers. Overall, the integration ecosystem is strong and well-curated.
Student management on Thinkific covers enrollment administration, progress monitoring, manual enrollment override, and group management.
Here’s the breakdown across plans:
The 10,000 student cap on Basic, Start, and Grow deserves a note.
Most individual creators will never approach 10,000 concurrent active students.
Fast-growing course academies and businesses that sell to organizations may reach this ceiling faster than expected, so plan for it before you need to escalate to Plus.
Group Analyst Accounts on the Grow plan give specific stakeholders read-only analytics access for their assigned student groups.
It’s a useful feature for businesses that sell courses to corporate clients who need visibility into their employees’ training progress without granting full admin access.
Verdict: Thinkific student management
Covers everything individual creators and small academies need. The 10,000 student limit will not affect most users, but it’s worth knowing. The enterprise management features on Plus are well-designed for complex organizational structures with multiple user types and reporting requirements.
A branded mobile app for your Thinkific course site is available as a $199/month add-on
It puts your own iOS and Android app under your brand name in the App Store, with no custom development required on your end.
The branded mobile app is also included on select Thinkific Plus plans.
For non-Plus users, the $199/month add-on significantly increases the platform’s total monthly cost.
Thinkific also has a standard learner app where students access courses, but it carries the platform’s branding, not yours.
For creators who want students to download their own branded app, the $199 add-on or a Plus plan is the only path.
A Grow plan at $199/month, for example, plus the mobile app add-on at $199/month, totals $398/month before any processing fees.
At that price, you’re comparing favorably against only the most expensive competitors, and not the mid-range ones.
Verdict: Thinkific mobile app
The branded app itself is well-executed and valuable for creators, where mobile learning drives engagement and completion. The $199/month add-on pricing makes it expensive for Grow plan users. Factor the full cost into your platform decision before choosing Grow over Plus.
Every Thinkific subscriber gets access to Thinkific Academy, a full training site that teaches how to build, market, and sell online courses.
This is professional training included at no extra charge.
The flagship program is Thinkific Fast Track: 28 short video tutorials, most under three minutes, covering course creation, website building, publishing, and business management.
The full program takes about an hour to complete.
What’s more, Neil Patel appears as an instructor in the curriculum design and content strategy courses.
Additional paid courses ($149-$299 each) on pricing, student engagement, course design, and Facebook advertising are available.
The Grow plan includes these free (a $300 to $600 value depending on which courses you take).
Fast Track also functions as a live demonstration of what a well-structured Thinkific course looks like from the student perspective.
You experience the Course Player, the lesson structure, and the progress tracking while learning how to build exactly the same thing.
That’s called smart product education.
Verdict: Thinkific Academy
One of the most underrated features on the platform. Free professional training on building, marketing, and selling online courses is included with every plan. The Fast Track course alone removes the learning curve that stops most new creators from launching. The Grow plan adds premium courses worth $150 to $300 each at no extra cost, which is a real dollar value that most Thinkific reviews never quantify.
Thinkific consultants are available through the Thinkific Experts marketplace, a curated directory of accredited partners including digital learning specialists, marketing professionals, technical developers, and launch strategists.
Every expert in the directory is accredited by Thinkific.
They know the platform in depth and have a verified track record of helping Thinkific users.
That’s different from finding a developer on a general freelancer marketplace who may have never used Thinkific before.
Verdict: Thinkific experts
Vetted, accredited consultants who know the platform remove the risk of hiring general freelancers who have never used Thinkific before. For growing businesses that need help with launch strategy, curriculum design, or technical integrations, this is a faster and lower-risk path than searching on your own.
Thinkific’s customer support tiers are clearly communicated and structured.
This is the kind of support you get from each plan:
The knowledge base is comprehensive, with over 500 articles, documents, and videos covering all areas of the service.
Thinkific Academy also provides structured self-service support for new creators.
Real users across Thinkific review platforms consistently rate the support team positively, saying tech support issues are resolved quickly.
The fact that the Basic and Start plans share the same support level is a real gap worth noting.
Paying $99/month doesn’t get you faster or better support.
Better customer service requires the $199 Grow plan, which is a consideration for growing businesses that value responsive support.
Verdict: Thinkific customer support
Above average for the online course platform category overall. The knowledge base is excellent, and the support team’s reputation is strong. However, email and chat support are a significant gap on both the Basic and Start plans, since $99/month should include a better customer experience on the support side.
Thinkific’s reliability uptime record for 2026 is strong.
The platform guarantees 99.5% uptime across all plans with continuous monitoring. Creators who’ve run multiple live course launches on Thinkific consistently report very few downtime events.
SSL security is also included on all plans.
HTTPS encryption is automatically enabled on all course pages, checkout pages, and student accounts, at no extra cost.
This is a baseline requirement that Thinkific meets without nickel-and-diming.
Still, advanced security features like password complexity requirements, dedicated sandbox site, formal SLA commitments, and MSA (Master Service Agreement) for compliance documentation are Plus-only.
Organizations in regulated industries that need contractual security guarantees need the Plus plan.
| A single platform outage during a course launch can cost creators between $2,000 and $15,000 in lost sales, refund processing, and reputation repair. Platform reliability is not a secondary feature; it is a core business requirement.Source: Cloudflare Platform Reliability and Commerce Impact Report 2024 |
Verdict: Thinkific security and uptime
Reliable infrastructure for all users across all plans. The 99.5% uptime guarantee is a real commitment. Enterprise security contracts are appropriately placed in the Plus tier. Thinkific’s uptime track record is among the strongest in the online course platform category.

Thinkific offers four monthly plans, with annual billing saving 25-27% depending on the plan.
| Plan | Monthly billing | Annual billing (approx.) |
| Basic | $49/month | $36/month |
| Start | $99/month | $74/month |
| Grow | $199/month | $149/month |
| Thinkific Plus | Custom | Custom |
Annual billing saves approximately 25% across all standard plans.
Thinkific says it has zero transaction fees, which is true if you use Thinkific Payments (TCommerce).
But when you use your own Stripe account instead, the platform charges an additional surcharge on every transaction.
Here’s the surcharge by plan when using third-party payment tools:
| Plan | Thinkific surcharge | Stripe standard fee | Real total per transaction |
| Basic | 5% | 2.9% + $0.30 | 7.9% + $0.30 |
| Start | 2% | 2.9% + $0.30 | 4.9% + $0.30 |
| Grow | 1% | 2.9% + $0.30 | 3.9% + $0.30 |
| Plus | 0% | 2.9% + $0.30 | 2.9% + $0.30 |
At $3,000/month in course revenue on the Basic plan using your own Stripe account, the Thinkific surcharge alone costs $150/month.
Your real monthly platform cost is $186, not the $36/month annual billing headline on the pricing page.
This surcharge applies to creators in the US, Canada, the UK, and the EU using their own Stripe accounts.
It covers your first $1 million in annual sales, after which Thinkific waives it. Creators in countries where Thinkific Payments is not available are exempt.
The fix is to use Thinkific Payments instead of direct Stripe.
But Thinkific Payments is only available in the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and select EU countries.
If you’re outside those regions, you have no choice but to use third-party processors and absorb the surcharge on Basic and Start plans.
Using Thinkific Payments removes the third-party surcharge entirely.
But there’s one more detail that most Thinkific pricing reviews haven’t yet caught up on.
As of March 1, 2026, Thinkific increased the subscription and payment plan processing fee on Thinkific Payments from 0.5% to 0.7%.
This means that any course sold via a payment plan or recurring subscription billing now processes at 3.6% total, 2.9% base plus 0.7% subscription fee, not the headline 2.9% shown on the marketing page.
That 3.6% applies specifically to recurring subscription and payment plan transactions.
One-time course purchases are still processed at 2.9% via Thinkific Payments.
For creators who sell high-ticket programs with payment plans, this is a meaningful distinction in the real cost per transaction.
PayPal as a payment option at student checkout is locked to the Grow plan at $199/month.
If you are on Basic or Start and your students want to pay with PayPal, they can’t.
For creators selling to international audiences where PayPal is widely used, this is a real conversion constraint that most Thinkific platform reviews never mention.

GroupApp vs Thinkific is the comparison for educators running group coaching, cohort courses, or learning programs where community accountability drives whether students actually complete the program.
Thinkific starts at $49/month, while GroupApp starts at $24/month, but the real distinction is in the structure.
On Thinkific, community and course content live in separate sections.
A student who has a question while watching lesson 7 has to leave the lesson, navigate to the community tab, and post in the general feed, where the question may or may not be seen.
The discussion is disconnected from the learning moment by design.
On GroupApp, every single lesson has its own built-in discussion channel.
Students post their questions right inside the lesson, their cohort responds in context, and the accountability happens at the exact moment of learning.
That architecture drives higher program completion rates for group-delivered programs.
GroupApp also includes Enforce Completion for cohort-based sequential content locking, real-time per-member progress tracking with login activity timestamps, automatic cohort segmentation, and built-in quizzes and certificates on all plans, including the $24 Launch plan.
On Thinkific, you need the $99 Start plan to get those same certificates and assignments that GroupApp includes for $24.
So yeah, Thinkific wins on building a public-facing course website with a custom domain, selling courses to a general audience, and advanced LMS tools for large-scale solo course delivery.
But GroupApp wins on group programs, cohort delivery, coaching businesses, and any program where what students learn from each other is as important as what they learn from you.
Thinkific is the right choice if you:
Thinkific is NOT the right choice if you:
Thinkific is a really good online course platform for creators and businesses who take course creation seriously.
The course builder is accessible and complete, the no-transaction-fee model via Thinkific Payments is genuinely competitive, and the App Store, Thinkific Academy, and Experts marketplace add value that competing platforms simply do not have.
The frustration is in the plan structure.
The Basic plan at $49 delivers a functional course site, but deliberately withholds too many professional features.
Most serious creators end up on Start at $99 or Grow at $199 in the first quarter, which makes the $49 entry price somewhat misleading as a headline.
At the Start and Grow plan levels, Thinkific earns its place among the strongest online course platforms on the market.
Final Verdict: Thinkific: 4.2 / 5
Thinkific is the professional choice for course creators who want a scalable, zero-fee-on-Thinkific-Payments course platform with enterprise growth potential. The Basic plan underperforms for the price. Start and Grow deliver the depth that earns Thinkific its strong review scores. Use the 30-day free trial to test the specific plan and features you need before you pay.
